In the first 10 months of this year, Hong Kong received more than 180,000 applications for the Talent Admission Scheme, of which more than 110,000 were approved, and 70,000 talents have entered Hong Kong, which is double the Government's original target. Vice-President of Lingnan University, Joshua Mok Ka-ho, said the figures were encouraging and reflected that Hong Kong was still attractive, but he expected the authorities to announce the countries and regions from which the 70,000 talents would come from.
Mok Ka-ho said in this program's "Millennium" that the recent QS release of the Asian University Rankings, experts mentioned that they are worried about whether Hong Kong's international talent energy will continue to improve in the future, and also hope that Hong Kong's talent will be diversified. Mr Mok said that if the authorities announced the source of overseas talents, it would be more helpful to analyse the effectiveness of the scheme.
Mok Ka-ho also mentioned that Hong Kong should also attract talents to take root in Hong Kong and replenish its population, and whether high-end talents stay in Hong Kong will consider the aspects of education, environmental protection, housing, and work-life balance in the place, and hope that the government and employers will do a good job in supporting them.
He also believes that the Scheme for Residence of Vocational and Professional Education Graduates (VEP) graduates proposed in the Policy Address will help Hong Kong attract middle-level technical staff and replenish manpower for industries such as construction.
